Masdar City, a city focused on renewable energies placed in the oil heaven

In the middle of the desert, in one of the most oil-producing countries in the world and owner of 8% of the known oil resources in the planet, nearby Abu Dhabi emirate, there is a new construction city called Masdar (Source in Arabic) that deserves an article in worldwtrade, as it aspires to be the first carbon free city in the World.

The city is being designed by the world famous architect Norman Foster. Its aim is to house 50,000 people by the end of the project, whose original idea comes from the private sector, but is being sponsored by the emirate government. Indeed, a big share of the financing comes from Mubadala’s sovereign funds, whose intention is to achieve a proper and effective diversification of Abu Dhabi’s economy.

The importance of this project relies on the need of diversify the energy sources that the emirate has. Abu Dhabi is entirely conscious that it has to diversify within the activities that sustain its growth to be able to have a long term economical sustainability. For instance, we can see how Abu Dhabi or Dubai have tried to specialize in attracting tourism or how they are doing efforts into becoming the most important transport hub between Europe and Asia, to both goods and people.

Moreover, Abu Dhabi considers that this is a good way to pay off a share of the harm it’s doing to the planet with the expulsion of carbon dioxide that provokes its core activity: the oil extraction. Hence, Abu Dhabi’s leaders conclude that it’s the least they can do: Promote and develop the clean energy. The estimated overall cost of the project once finished (among 2015-2020) is about $19,800 billion, which means a big deal for the clean energy companies and the whole sector.

As probably you know, if there is a sector where Spain is a leader country, it’s the renewable energy one, and naturally, Spanish companies are leading the development of Masdar.

Amid the Spanish businesses in the field, it stands out the creation of the Joint Venture Torresol, made up by Sener and Masdar. This JV involves an investment commitment of $2,600 billion for this year. The production base installed exceeds the 320MW and it’s expected to reach 1,000MW in 8 years time. This JV pursues the obtaining of the expertise and the know-how of the Spanish companies in the development of state-of-the-art technology that has placed it in the leading role of the worldwide engineering. On the other hand, Masdar achieves to diversify its economy and strengthen the image of an active country in the fight against global warming and advocate of sustainable growth. Abengoa has also generated a JV getting another deal for the creation of a new solar powerplant in Masdar, by joining the France-based firm Total. They will operate the plant shams-1 together with the firm Masdar. This project will mean the biggest solar powerplant inside the UAE. Abener and Teyma, two firms branches of Abengoa, will lead the plant build up. Once the powerplant begins to work, Abengoa and Total will lead the maintenance and operation.

To sum up, Spain is playing an important role in the field of renewable energies. In fact, it could be told that it impress some of the leaders in this field. Besides, the Masdar example allows to find interesting energy diversification projects, due to the awareness that oil is a limited source by the producing countries
